Reading at St George’s

Reading is a huge part of life at St George’s. We ask that all children read at least 4 times a week at home to ensure they become fluent, comprehensive readers. Children will receive a raffle ticket every time there are 10 signatures in their reading record. One ticket will be drawn from each class at the end of every half term. The winner will receive a reading hamper of age appropriate books.

Alongside our class library, we also have our Top 10 Reads. These are books which have been specially chosen to promote reading for pleasure, equality and a high level of vocabulary. Children are encouraged to read as many of these 10 books throughout the year and record which they have read in the reading record.

English

This half term in English we are sharing the text Sky Song - a magical, wintry fantasy adventure set in the frozen kingdom of Erkenwald, a land of icy seas, drifting icebergs and tundra where whales, wolves and polar bears roam. Once full of community and magic, Erkenwald is now ruled by a cruel Ice Queen who has cursed the land and begun stealing the voices of its people to strengthen her power.

Through this text the pupils will be creating a persuasive leaflet and writing a story with speech.

Maths

This half term in maths, pupils will be focusing on area, multiplication & division and length & perimeter. We will continue to follow White Rose Maths for our maths lessons.

To support maths learning at home, please ensure you child is engaging with TTRS. Times Tables Rockstars is an online educational platform and app used to learn, practise, and improve multiplication (times tables) and related division skills through fun, game-based activities. Pupils can practise individually or enter into rock battles with their classmates and teachers.

Please speak to Mrs Gorczyca is you require your child's log in details.

Science

Plants

This half term in science, our focus in on plants. Through this unit of work, pupils will be learning about the parts of a plant, how plants make their own food and what the purpose of a flower is. They will use two investigations to further their learning.

Learning Challenges:

  • What are the parts of a flowering plant and what do they do?
  • Do all plants need the same things to thrive and grow?
  • How do leaves make food for the plant?
  • What do flowers do?
  • What is pollination?

National Curriculum Objectives:

  • identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers
  • explore the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant
  • investigate the way in which water is transported within plants
  • explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal

RE

People of God

In this unit, pupils will learn about the Old Testament people of God and how they lived their lives. They will learn the story of Noah, considering what it was like for him to follow God. They will learn about the covenant that Christians believe that Noah made with God, making links to the promises that Christians make at a wedding ceremony. Pupils will spend time looking at several texts that share stories from the Old Testament people of God in detail. They will consider the importance of returning to the original text for meaning rather than learning the story from videos or children’s books. Later in the unit, pupils will learn about the story of Abram/Abraham and the covenant that he made with God. They will consider why following God might sometimes feel hard for believers.

Learning Challenges:

  • Which information about Bible stories can we get from different types of text?
  • What can we say about Noah from reading the biblical story?
  • What is the link between the story of Noah and the idea of covenant?
  • What is the link between a Christian wedding ceremony and the idea of covenant?
  • Does Abram show he trusted in God?
  • Is it always easy for Christians to try to follow God?
